Changing Gears on Lathe

The machine shop lathes have two gears, High and Low, to allow for a wide range of speeds to support various operations and materials. Although the gear hand wheels for the two lathes are slightly different, the process is the same on each machine.

Changing from High to Low Gear

Gear shift knob in the OUT position. Hand wheel in the OUT position.


  1. Ensure lathe is off.
  2. Engage gear shift knob by pulling OUT.
  3. Pull gear hand wheel OUT.
  4. Leave the gear shift knob engaged for low gear.
  5. Start the lathe and adjust speed as desired.

Changing from Low to High Gear

Hand wheel in the IN position. Gear shift knob in the IN position.


  1. Ensure lathe is off.
  2. Push hand wheel IN.
  3. Turn hand wheel until it clicks.
  4. Disengage the gear shift knob by pushing IN.
  5. Start the lathe and adjust speed as desired.
