Mounting Tools (HAAS Mill)

The rack under the HAAS workbench contains all the tool holders for the mill.

This page provides a basic tutorial on mounting tools into chucks, collets, and solid (set screw) holders for the HAAS mill. For all types of tool holders covered here, the take-down procedures are the reverse of the setup steps.

Chuck Holder

Chuck holders for the HAAS mill work just like the chuck on a drill press. Use them to mount drill bits, countersinks, and other vertically-cutting tools with shanks that are not sized to fit a standard collet.

Setup
Tool/Step Description
Step 1
Select the appropriate chuck holder for the tool you wish to mount, and obtain the proper chuck key from the adjacent red tool box.
Step 2
Insert the chuck holder into the block on the table, and open the jaws enough to insert the tool.
Step 3
Hand-tighten the chuck, then tighten it firmly by using the chuck key at each key location.
Step 4
The tool is now mounted, and ready to be loaded into the mill.

Collet

Collets can be used to hold a variety of drilling and cutting tools. Use them with tools that have standard-diameter, round shanks.

Setup
Tool/Step Description
Step 1
Select the appropriate collet for the tool you wish to mount. The tool should slip into the collet easily, but with minimal slop.
Step 2
Select an appropriate collet holder.
Step 3
Screw off the collet holder cap, and place the holder in the block on the table.
Step 4
Snap the empty collet into the cap. Make sure that the collet is held by the ridge inside the cap; failure to do so can damage or destroy tools.
Step 5
Thread the cap and collet back onto the collet holder. Do not tighten it yet.
Step 6
Insert the tool into the collet, and hand-tighten the cap.
Step 7
Using the proper spanner wrench, tighten the cap down firmly.
Step 8
The tool is now mounted, and ready to be loaded into the mill.

Solid (Set Screw) Holder

Solid holders use a set screw that engages with a notch in the shank of the tool. Use these holders only for tools that are keyed in this manner.

Setup
Tool/Step Description
Step 1
Select the appropriate solid holder for the tool you wish to mount, and obtain the proper hex wrench from the adjacent red tool box.
Step 2
Insert the solid holder into the block on the table, and loosen the set screw enough for the tool to slip in.
Step 3
Insert the tool, lining up the flat-face of the key with the set screw. Advance the set screw until it touches, then back it off a hair and check to make sure it is engaging the key by sliding the tool up and down in the holder. If the tool has minimal vertical travel, and can not be completely removed from the holder, the set screw is inside the key.
Step 4
Tighten the set screw down firmly, checking that the set screw is being tightened square against the surface of the key to ensure proper retention.
Step 5
The tool is now mounted, and ready to be loaded into the mill.
